in response to reader comment: sharia in turkey

Submitted by B. Williame (Belgium), Apr 28, 2008 at 03:27

Possible, but not certain.

The reason if not the only and main reason for Sharia not being implemented yet into Turkey it's because of the influence of it's army.

Though western world has less and less power given to military and more to politicians I do believe the same thing applies for Turkey and as such democratically it's just a matter of time before it is implemented. Unless of course something big would happen, like an army uprising or taking the ruling power of politicians out of their hands...

As always the biggest enemy of Democracy is democracy itself . the early Greeks already learned this harsh lesson. A democracy is often installed after a revolt against some sort of dictator. (breach in the system) But a democracy can be democratically voted out (use of the system against itself)

Same thing is possible with The west as with the east. Or Bush for that matter... Tyrants can be voted to power... while normally tyrants won't just give democracy to it's people putting their own power at risk.(unless it's already at risk)

Now back to the example of Turkey it's past elections does make a change... while with their past the same people(but under a differentparty name) where bannend from political actions, but wheren't this time. Would democracy survive or will there be need of violence to preserve it against the will of it's mean populations desire... IF that would ever be the case. Something to watch as a test case.

What is your idea about this Taj?
