It's something that Bush, Robertson, etc., push for, but that is just guys talking from a fundamentalist reconstructionist view. The U.S. has tried to keep religion and government separate even in our Constitution. One can openly be an atheist, Taoist, Wiccan, or what have you in the U.S. In no country that refers to itself as "Islamic" could a group of atheists put up a building to come together similar to a mosque and put a sign on the door that said "Atheism practiced here." In the U.S., that's perfectly OK. So the evidence suggests that shari'a does follow wherever Islam goes.
