Heartening Disheartening History

Reader comment on item: A Democratic Islam?

Submitted by David Sabghir (United States), Apr 17, 2008 at 12:00

This is a description of Islam's potential, which is at this juncture of the world, is about as likely as the proverbial lamb lying down with the lion or better yet, Hamas deciding to live in peace with Israel.

The heart (such as Jimmy Carter's) can grasp the possibilty, but the rational mind doesn't see it for about another thousand years.

If six hundred years ago, someone had written about the "democratization" of the Catholic Church, after they were jailed or killed at the stake, they would have had to stumble over the Inquisition, pogroms, Chmielnitzki, the Holocaust, etc. As they say, it's a lot of water over the dam from there to here.

To think about what that means in terms of Islam is difficult to conceive, maybe a few world wars, a couple of nuclear bombs, etc. etc. (I am concerned about the etceteras)

What's hundreds of millions of deaths of martyrs and non-believers between friends?

Just as the samizdat sunk the former Soviet Union, I believe that the end of oil as the dominant form of energy will send Islam back into its cave until such time as it emerges as a religion that respects others, which after fifteen hundred years, it has made little progress.
