An invitation to Minnesota State Representative-elect Ilhan Omar

Reader comment on item: A Democratic Islam?

Submitted by Prashant (United States), Jan 3, 2017 at 13:58

Dear Dr Pipes,

The news is abuzz with the story about Ilhan Omar who created history by becoming the first Somali American law maker in the US. She recently won the Minnesota state representative election to enshrine her name in history. All is well and good. She is a colored person, a women, and a Muslim. And she wasted no time in telling the world that her election 'Offers a Counter-Narrative to the Bigotry in the World'.

So, we have another person from the regions of the world where violence is the name of the game, where women's right are inferior but still enough to give them elevated status, where democracy is not given even lip service, and where rights of religious minorities are not even defined. This person, like so many others of her kind, are ready to tell Americans what bigotry is and how should it be contained.

But as an immigrant myself, who am I to call Ms Omar for her hypocrisy? I will humbly salute the American democracy compared to the rest of the world (specially Islamic part of the world) and just extend the following invitation to Ms Omar:

Dear Ms Omar, as soon as you get a chance, please issue a statement that, as law maker in the United States, it is your belief that every Islamic nation on earth should be a secular democracy. And, given that you are fairly young, please fight tirelessly throughout the rest of your life to bring decent democracy to Islamic world. You see, Ms Omar, it is not just US that needs democracy. The entire world does. God bless America and God bless democracy.
