Defining "Islamic Democracy"

Reader comment on item: A Democratic Islam?

Submitted by Mike Ramirez (United States), Apr 17, 2008 at 12:00

The Hamas victory only shows proof that one Muslim sect can out-vote another Islamic sect in a "Democratic process". The region still remains Islamic and united by the ideology that is bent on destroying Israel and subjecting all non-Muslims to dhimmitude.

On the other hand, a Western-style Democracy in the "Muslim world" will not occur until Islamic nations allow all Muslim citizens to individually choose whether to remain Muslim or be given the freedom to embrace another faith and/or ideology. Muslim countries will need to revise their Constitutions which are foundationally based upon allegiance to Al'lah, the Islamic prophet, Muhammad, and the Qur'an which is used as their guide to governance of the world.

Conclusion: A "Democratic Islam" cannot evolve into a Western-style Democracy without rejecting the foundational tenets that established Islam in the first place.
