Taqiya is new to me, both as a meaning and reason for use, because we do not use it in the Muslim countries. No shame in not knowing this. What I know about taqwa and taqia are that they are related in meaning: piety. tattaqi is their present tense verb which can mean "to fear, to avoid, or to protect".

I searched for taqiya and found that it means: "to save life, honour. or property (either one's own or of other be­lievers) by hiding one's belief or religion". Therefore, it is not bad.

If I moved to a non-Muslim country and I wanted to lie about my belief to protect myself and knew that lying is forbidden except in the 3 cases, I would ask an Islamic scholar for what to do. S/he would tell me about taqiya for sure.
