Democracy is only a tool; not...

Reader comment on item: A Democratic Islam?

Submitted by Doug Corrigan (United States), Apr 24, 2008 at 11:39

Why do people say, "We want DEMOCRACY!" , as if Democracy will cure all ills? Democracy is only a tool; and it can be used for good or for evil. In the USA we try to use it for good; in Palestine it was used for evil — which is understandable since the Palistinians are Moslems, and Moslems are evil by nature.

If a Mafia gang votes to kill some politician, that's Democracy, though probably not "good" Democracy. If some government, however, votes to extend freedom of speech to its citizens, that's Democracy, and "very good" Democracy.

What we really want from any governing scheme, is that it constantly work to EXTEND FREEDOM TO ITS CITIZENS. And remember, governments should be "OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE" — governments should not be run by a ruling class of clergy; not by a class of rich idiots; not by a military junta; not by a cadre of philosophically elite bizarros (ie: communists, socialists, anarchists, etc).

If the imams of islam vote to take over the world, as stipulated in the filthy koran, then —hey — that's Democracy; but not necessarily the kind you want to see.

What we want is FREEDOM! And the most likely way that freedom will come about is thru the tool of Democracy — OF, BY, and FOR!
