Friend no moreReader comment on item: Turkey: An Ally No More Submitted by Rebecca Moulds (United States), Nov 2, 2009 at 08:40 Turkey has always presented the West with its conundrum of politics, religious fervor and tourism. While a popular tourist destination for many years, it is also representative of Muslim extremism although hidden behind a facade of Westernized culture, more so than say, Egypt is. Christianity is frowned upon, even downright persecuted. Islam reigns supreme. What Attaturk began, Erdogan has destroyed. It is sad to think that Israel's closest ally in the Middle East has now made a swing away from further relations, and this sleeping giant is emerging as an Islamic state, preferring to align itself with Syria and Iran--- an error indeed.
