Dustbins of Turkish history

Reader comment on item: Turkey: An Ally No More

It's interesting to note again and again how historically inexperienced and naive the so called West is in dealing with Moslem states like Turkey. It's so funny to observe the Western hubris taking its own dreams and fantasies for reality and when duped in due course by its Turkish mignon to see how reluctant and slow the West is to see and admit its abject failure and point to Turkey's perfidious cunning. But there is nothing unsual or new in all of that! Quite the contrary! It's quite natural. While pretending to play the West's favourite game of 'secularism' (simultaneously becoming a 99,8% Moslem monoculture !) and anti-communism (a splendid cause through which the Turks managed to expelled the Greeks from Constantinople, rob with impunity under the protection of the US Sixth Fleet half Cyprus, and embark on the delirious Pan-Turkic empire-building in post-Soviet Central Asia after 1991) the Turks in secret have been playing only their own game - the very same game they had played so successfully over and over again against their former saviours, arms suppliers and political supporters from as improbable places as Lenin's Soviet Russia, imperial Britain, imperial and republican France or Kaiser's Germany. At the end of the day all of these old Turkish 'allies' were sold, betrayed, replaced and rejected with Ottoman contempt the moment Turkey felt strong enough to throw away its different masks and protective clothes. And it has always profited in terms of power and territory from the gullibility of its "allies" while the 'allies' have been invariably the losers. So why all these lamentations now that the time has come for the latest Turkish "allies" from America and Israel to be duly relegated to their "rightful" place in the dustbin of Turkish history so few ever care to take a glance into ?
