God is Love

Reader comment on item: Is Allah God? - Continued

If there's a God -- it's one of love and mercy. This is most apparent when watching suffering of those you once held intense anger towards -- and being somewhat surprised that it's breaking your heart.

Argue all you want about which of your Gods is the real one. Pipes and the Catholic church are right. There's one. Islamists claim their Allah is the real one -- and if you don't convert to Islam -- you're dead, or they'll make sure you end up dead. Either way, they certainly don't recognize a Christian or Jewish God as their own. So the Catholic Church is far more magnanimous, more imaginative, more intellectual -- about God.

And fundamentalist Christians claim if you're not their particular form of Christianity, let alone Jews and others -- you're doomed to hell.

God can be most clearly seen in pain, vulnerability. That's real love. And that's God.

This very person, the one I'm watching suffering, during a visit to him, gave me the book "The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason." Atheists would love it. But the mercy in my heart right now, watching suffering, is a million times stronger than any great philosophical argument. God is Love.
