Reader comment on item: Is Allah God? - Continued
in response to reader comment: What is God?

Submitted by Oliver (United States), Feb 4, 2010 at 21:49

Hello Josue,

'In the beginning god created the heavens and the earth.'

Are you suggesting that this should read:

'In the beginning creator created the heavens and the earth.'

The English word 'god(s)' is representative of the Hebrew word 'elohim' which while being plural is often translated in the singular dependent on the context. The misuse of god's name (YHWH) is what was prohibited but seeing as no one truly knows how to pronounce YHWH it is difficult to misuse.

I believe it is blasphemous to refer to YHWH as ALLAH (name for name) but it is perfectly OK to use allah for god or elohim (generic references).
