Sadly relatable

i have a dear friend in a relationship with a man who is away on what he tells her is business for months at a time in different parts of the US and the Middle East. She is always worried and crying for him, and she has to ask his permission to do anything even while he is away. I can't even go to lunch with her until he has approved. I feel that this is emotionally abusive behavior and controlling, and i am sad that i cannot do normal things with her. she is always depressed, and i can't even take her out to lunch or coffee to console her.
