DNM:
If what this points to is as systematically integrated into Islamism lore such as say, the Arabian Nights, we could be looking at a psychologically based reinforcement of propaganda utilized to convince the Islamic hordes and their potential next targets of the invincibility of the invasion and make dhimmitude look like it is better to capitulate than to be eliminated as many vassal Arabic Christian communities were in the 'cleansing' propaganda that many fell to.
How well did it work?
A quick foray into modern monuments in the region indicate a modern acknowledgement of such an event and from that, and also indicated is the power of the legend(s) still be told in the regions as well as Disney animation with stars such as Robin Williams playing the Gin and telling of how Aladdin won the girl. Is this not the mystique that swirls around the narratives that give Muslim men ideas of how they can obtain harems of their own (coming back the the heading of this particular topic)?
In a world that is running headlong into diversions of Chauvinist fantasies by which legend one seeks to capitalize on a future in which a return to ambitions of empire appears to the totalitarian psyche (and there are plenty of candidates), it is more than obvious in the resurgency of Islamic culture such fantasies are found to be the basis of potentially hashish driven legends that drive those in Afghanistan's Taliban takeover; and the takeover of the crops that give support and control over an industry such cravings allow.
How else could one sell a flying carpet?
