This verse is very difficult to understand if read in isolation without al-Tabari's Tafsir. Why would it be this way? Wansbrough was correct in pointing out that Classical Arabic is a derivative of Quranic Arabic. And it was not, as we are told by Muslims that Classical Arabic ----> Quranic Arabic.

Notice that al-Tabari is explaining the sentences that have no clear meaning by the standards of 3rd century Classical Arabic and his "translation" from Quranic Arabic to Classical Arabic unlocks the meaning of these sentences.

This does not mean that these are mistakes in syntax/grammar, because the meaning would have been understood by Muhammad and his generation. However, 300 years later the meaning had to be "translated" to what became Classical Arabic.

PS: 1. Check Ghali's translation it is the best. His mother tongue is Arabic and his command of English is excellent and stay away from the likes of Yusuf Ali and Maududi (sp?) translations.

2. I also suggest that you check a very good feature of the Sahih International translation where you can tap each word and you will get a translation of the word
