It was very wise of You to end this "relationship". Did he want a civil marriage or just a religious one?
"he sent the sweetest stuff" - I at first imagined him sending huge silver plates filled with baklawa and halawa. All he sent were free messages and cheap talk.
About mentality - he has made a move and for him You accepted seclusion when he asked You to. And by accepting to stay ALONE with him when he was professing his love You have, for him, accepted a relationship with him. Never mind the boyfriend - for MENA men most Western women are harlots anyway - with or without husbands or boyfriends. Next time, please be firm and flatly refuse to listen or stay alone with a mena man.
