But it is the beaurocracy he serves which wishes to 'respect' the Arab/Muslim world.

In those days, one gets the impression the civil service was cynical, but I imagine that by now the civil service is in the grips of political correctness. In that sense, the Britain which threw Czechoslovakia to the wolves saying "a country about which we know little" is superior to todays. Had they been then as they are now, they would have thoroughly demonized Czechoslovakia before throwing it to the wolves.
