Reader comment on item: Hijabs on Western Public Women
in response to reader comment: Understand the Hijab

Modern society places strong demands on everyone, most severly on the young. By "Covering up", young and old seek to escape from the world which can indeed be difficult . One may seek refuge by withdrawing in many ways. Some seek refuge in drugs, alcohol, or the false security of gangs or even depression and psychosomatic illness.

Hiding from the world by wearing an article of clothing will only lead to more hiding. Why not the burqua? or the habit of a nun, or any of the of the uniforms, head dresses, or dresses which set you apart? You are under no obligation to wear short dresses, or reveaing clothing. If you hide behind a scarf now, you will always be hiding.

Better to educate yourself, gain the confidence you need to be your own person. Of course wearing an article of clothing, which many see as offensive, will get you special treatment. Your special attention may be the attention of pity for a young and obviously sensitive woman unable to cope in a modern, and at time confusing world.

Best wishes to you....
