Westerners donning Hijabs or scarfs

Reader comment on item: Hijabs on Western Public Women

Submitted by Gail Tenzer (United States), Mar 23, 2008 at 12:32

When visiting a house of worship, I suppose it is no different than when Cheney or Bush or any other U.S. politician wears a Yarmulke out of respect for our synagogue.

I vehemently object, however, to donning a Hijab at other venues, to submit to Dhimmitude and give Islam more respect than to our own Judeo Christian faiths.

More important, right now, is again the threat of violence in reaction to Dutch politician Wilder's recent 15 minute film. To forbid a debate and abridge freedom of speech, particularly under threat of rioting and committing crimes in our Western world, while at the same time offending Jews and Christians---I believe that this is the more important issue to tackle than the wearing of Hijabs.

Under no circumstances, however, should IDs, Driver's Licenses or any other document be issued to anyone whose face is covered, as some Muslims are requesting regarding Driver's Licenses. If they don't want to have a photo of their faces taken as ID's, then they'll just have to get through life in the West without one---which makes life difficult: can't cash checks, can't enter certain premises, etc.

The reason here is not one of discrimination, but rather---SECURITY! Anyone can hide under complete coverage and pretend to be someone else---and how would we be able to determine who in fact we are dealing with?
