Meeting People on Skype

Dear Sloan:

Let me just say that meeting people on a chat service like Skype for a real serious (and healthy) relationship is a horrible idea.

It's rather clear to me that this man had the intention of a romantic relationship and learning English was more or less a cover to reel you in.

"I helped him for a couple of months and he honestly just seemed to be interested in the language. Then, something changed in his conversation and he started getting really personal. We talked a lot about his family, my family, love, past relationships, goals for the future etc.

I could feel that he was charming me into a "serious" relationship but I didn't stop him. I went with him emotionally and I allowed myself to feel for him. Why? I'm still asking myself that question. Could it have been me filling a thirst for a deep connection?

There was an article on Y! News today that said it all: "women find intimacy in communication"

That's all you two were doing and you were focused in on your computer.

But there is something you need to look at with yourself as to why you need to find someone on-line like that.

If you are resolved to meeting someone on-line, please use a dating service and be as local as possible. You'll still have to observe the warning signs and be careful, but this is the better option.

People who need to use skype (or Y! Messanger, AIM, myspace, facebook) to find true love are almost always wasting their time.
