Your gut feeling is correct about this man he is laying in on in the hope that he can access money - your money!

I must add that women do not have any freedom in Syria. You only see them in the streets shrouded in black from head to toe and accompanied by male family members. I visited there briefly about 9 years ago and couldn't wait to get out of the country as it was so depressing and oppressive. With the civil unrest there I doubt the attitudes towards women have changed.
