Where do you get your information that women are not allowed to leave.

Because there have been American women trapped in marriages with these men abroad.

It's also the case with kids.

If they have their own money and visiting who would stop them?

The fact is that in many of these countries, women are not seen as equals. That is part of the culture and can be harshly reflected in the courts, even if no formal laws about it are officially on the books.

While it may have been like that a long time ago, I think many things have changed...

They haven't.

Their are consultants and embassies and who would be the one to prevent someone from leaving and middle eastern country?

No nation is going to risk damaging its reputation aboard or a political alliance because some American woman (or man, frankly) made a bad choice and cannot leave. It will NEVER happen.

If you're stuck in your husband's house as a third wife doing all the chores and raising the kids and can't go out, that's the way it is in a lot of cases.

It's not even the embassy or consulate that keeps women there; it's their husbands!

If you're not allowed to use the phone, internet or leave, how would they know there is even a problem?!

You might want to see the film "Not without my Daughter" for insight into this.

Also: Do you really think this American government of ours is going to risk an international incident that could embarrass the leaders in DC or make gas prices go up for the sake of a few women who made bad personal choices in their romantic life?

They are MUCH MORE concerned with keeping out terrorists and child sex traffickers from their own borders than some on-line relationship drama.

Now some M.E. countries I would not travel to due to safety issues...(Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Egypt, Syria, Libia)...but Lebanon, Jordan and others are very safe and the people there very different from what you read about. I'm just curious where you get your information.

Have you seen the news lately? The entire Middle East and most of North Africa is ON FIRE! Do you really think that what is going in neighboring countries with all out war and protests and changes in government that it will stay contained?
