Name-sake conversion is a complete No-No

Dear Dr. Pipes, Regarding people planning to fall in love and marry Muslims, I have a warning. The Muslim suitor's petition is almost standard and I have seen it many times. The petition almost always says that the suitor is a very modern Muslim s/he is almost an atheist. The non-Muslim partner will be able to keep her religion even after marriage. But due to the stupid religious dogma, the children of the marriage would have to be raised as Muslims. And, the marriage will not be valid unless the partner takes the shahada and becomes a Muslim for the sake of the Islamic marriage ceremony.

People should realize that there is no such thing as a name-sake conversion. In the Muslim wedding ceremony, you will be asked to recite the shahada which for all intent and purposes is a one-way street into Islam. And, the harmless advice that the children be raised as Muslim makes the whole thing a complete hogwash.

Never agree to it! Never agree to it!!

However, if the Muslim suitor agrees to civil marriage, plans to attend your churches, agrees to explore both religions, and imposes no conditions on the children of the marriage, then you can agree to give him a chance provided he also unequivocally opposes ISIS and other forms of Islamic terrorism. Such will be a good life.
