Dear Dhimmi No More,

Thanks a lot for moving the "Hafiz" word topic to the top, because I'm afraid my comment was very left behind now on the board and it's a very interesting topic.

I agree with you that is totally nonsense to memorise one whole Arabic book. Not to mention when many believers don't even know what they're repeating.

The aim of memorise the whole Qur'an is to be able to vary the sequence of Surahs when praying salah. As they say, Allah appreciates the effort. Also, the pronunciation must be as perfect as one can make it, because otherwise, it can make the prayer invalid. Indeed, one sound can change the meaning, but it's absolutely aberrant to pretend to pronounce and recite a language like a native without even having the knowledge of it. But, don't forget, "it's the language of God", thus is the most perfect one. Definitely, a total waste of time to have all your "namaz" invalidated because of the pronunciation. I guess that making the effort of memorising it wasn't enough to get closer to God...

Yes, my children would have been "full-huffaz" (as it's seems that he even didn't know the plural of the term he used with so much passion, how pathetic) and of course, I should have learnt them at a faster pace because my interest for other issues was bigger than in getting closer to my Lord...

Thanks a lot for this post. Much appreciated and one which definitely contributes to enriching this forum.
