Yes, they can be wonderful, and say the sweetest things. My husband said and did blatantly cruel things to me, but because he would turn around and be all sweetness and light, I would question my perception. This is cognitive dissonance. It's a very difficult situation, because you're in love with the person you think they are, the person they presented themself to be, and you want to believe the best about them. They count on this. I hate to say this, but I doubt your situation with him will improve. I'm very lucky my husband was never able to immigrate to my country, because things would have been even worse.
