in response to reader comment: Food for thought

This does actually correlate with something my husband told me during my second visit to him in Morocco. I asked him if he had ever eaten camel, because I was joking with him about all the weird (at least to me) things they eat there, and the fact that I saw camel head and neck for sale at the butcher (I even have photos of it). His response was that he had never eaten it, then said it was for people who were sick. I was like, what? He never elaborated, and I let it go. I put it down to yet another weird thing Moroccans do. That whole eating with the hands from a communal dish would not have gone over well with my family. In fact, one of my brothers said that if he had come here and tried that at his house, he would smack his hand with a kitchen utensil. He also said, Muslim or not, he would be serving ham at Christmas, and my husband could just get over it. Needless to say, my family was less than thrilled that I had married him. None of them ever met him, but what they knew about him from me, they didn't like. I guess I'm just too accommodating and accepting of cultural differences, which I thought was a good thing. But I draw the line at camel urine. ;)
