I've been to Hurghada in Egypt many times, which is practically a playground for gigolos. And I've seen it all... you do see women in their eighties even, arm in arm with young boys. Certainly you'll find most of them are looking for fun and a shot at reliving their youth. The more naive ones - of which you speak - truly believe their habibi is in love with them. Even when the red flags are flying right in front of them.

However, it's not always the case. These men target everyone, both young and old. They target girls in their teens (google Amy Robson). They are very, very good at what they do and they usually go for women who are people pleasers or have low self esteem. Most of all, they are good at making women believe they want a future together. So you'll also get a lot of good women that are sick of their own, noncommittal and emotionally unavailable men... and get swept away by this fake machismo.

The fake machismo is what gets a lot of women, because these men have a way of playing the manly man even while asking you for money. They are incredibly manipulative, and have been doing it for years. It's like a job to them.
