They think we deserve it

Bear in mind Jackie, that there's a lot of hidden or not so hidden anti western sentiment in this corner of the globe - certain north africans in particular are not so fond of tourists (only our money lol). To them we're all a bunch of Trump sympathisers, even if it couldn't be further from the truth.

If ever you do travel to North Africa, try to spend a lot of time there with someone you trust... a friend or relative... a local female... learn French if you don't already know it... and you will slowly get to know how people think and what they think of tourists. My mother is English and I've lost count of the times I've heard men calling out "fromage" (or abyad in Egypt)... go figure...

So, it wouldn't surprise me if this Algerian man of yours finds the whole situation amusing. How can you empathise with someone that you don't respect? A lot of the time they feel we deserve what we get, for being an infidel... for being relatively wealthy... the list goes on.
