Savvy, he really does sound like a nice guy and I hope he continues to be. Don't they all start like this though?

You are correct about the close relationship with their mothers. They rarely, if ever, go against mother's wishes. This is where you have to keep your eyes wide open. Mother has a big say in whom the son chooses to marry.
I am hoping the fact that she is educated, perhaps independent and exposed to your culture, that she might be willing to break away from the tradition of her son having to marry a virgin, from similar background.
Don't be surprised if you are asked to become a Muslim. Are you prepared for that event?
