Again it can and does work out from time to time, but these instances are rare. What we often see here on Daniel Pipes is the typical older woman younger man scenario, which we tend to mark as a red flag because

A) Love does not happen online - love is physical as well as emotional and you can't truly love someone without spending a lot of real time together
B) Marriages should not be planned over the web - any self-respecting man will wait to meet a woman face to face to see if the spark is still there
C) In M/E culture men marry younger women, usually virgins

Now every now and then you will get exceptions to the rule, for example men that are more educated might be less strict about who they marry, or you'll have men scamming women that are younger than them. Really you simply can't tell who's genuine and who isn't, and this can even apply to homegrown relationships. What you can do, is watch a man's actions - not his words - and let time be the judge. The truth always comes out in the end.
