On messenger he's clicking his chat off. This way it does not show up. Normally when someone is doing this it's because they are hiding from someone. He probably doesn't want you to know when he's online

I'm sorry to tell you this but it's the only explanation I can come up with. Use internet Facebook and go to messages and it will show. Try this and see what happens.
