lesson learned

I just had to tell someone my current situation. My 16 year old daughter had friended a 25 year old man living in Egypt. In 2 months time he had her promising true love to him and he called her his princess. She fell hook line and sinker, convinced that he will wait for her to turn 18 and they can then be together. We took her phone and computer away but she kept finding ways to email him. This, in defiance to me and my husband.

He was like a drug for her, she just couldn't not have contact with him. This frightened us. So, on the advice from someone I found from Egypt and has a blog, we wanted to talk with. My daughter contacted him on facetime and he would not even speak with us. He wouldn't even fight for her, to try and convince us he was not like all the things we have read about Egyptian men and were showing our daughter. She was visibly mad and upset and he still would not talk with us. He said we were racist. So, she said if you don't talk with them then everything they have been saying must be true and it's over. This was the best outcome we could have asked for. I'm still treating her like an addict because there has been some real trust that's been broken but I am hopeful that he will not try to contact her in the future and that she does not do so in kind.

This DanielPipes.org forum has been a true Godsend. I had her read a bunch of these replies and I think that planted the seed of doubt. Aside from him being too old for her, I think she was able to see that the culture he grew up in does not resemble the one we live in. He had such sweet talk for her and she fell for it. She feels stupid but we tell her it was not her fault and this is a great learning experience. Teenagers.
