Got involved with an Algerian at Work and now he's ignoring me

I just feel completely lost an betrayed, I work in Algeria and a work college requested me as a friend and we got chatting, I thought there was something special between us he was very sweet saying he had been missing me and how he loved my mentality, i must of been very vunrable, when I met him on another site we kissed in my office and it was very passionate and felt real, he asked me to be his girl friend and said he never wanted to lose me,

this all happened with in a week we spoke a lot about the difference in culture and i made it clear and he seemed fine with that, we planned to go on holiday together next month, we also spoke about how we could make things work between us and the possiblity of him moving to scotland with me in the future, it was all very strong and very fast, 2 nights ago I just had a bad feeling and said i think we should just leave things as there was so many complications and he was talking about being worried about what his parents would think and started saying he should maybe tell them i'm just a friend who likes to travel,

he talked me out of ending the situation and i decided not to worry about the situation and just enjoy the feeling I was having, last night we were meant to speak before him leaving to go on leave and I messaged him and tried calling him and he has just ignored everything. I just find it so hard to believe he was playing me all this time .. i asked an expat college his opition of him and he thought very highly of him .. how can you tell someone you never want to lose them? But i suppose how can you tell someone that after 7 days of chatting, we have known each other for a year, not well although he said he feels like he knows me well .. he has been observing. I keep hoping the reason that he has stepped back due to the culture and telling his parent about us but I have such a bad feeling deep down, I thought he would of at least told me he needs some space, feeling like a complete fool.
