Valid points, however (Some truths about Morocco)Reader comment on item: Advice to Non-Muslim Women against Marrying Muslim Men Submitted by Lina (United Kingdom), Sep 24, 2013 at 09:50 While a great majority of Moroccan men (and women) do look for a foreign partner for money or immigration, this is not always the case, and I am saying this with experience and insight. Dear Christine, to put this in context, I would say that the majority of Moroccan boys learn from a young age that they need to find a western girlfriend to have any real chance in life to get on. This is not always true. Although rare, there are some Moroccans that are too pious, proud of themselves and their culture to marry a foreigner for unsavoury purposes, and would rather rely on hard work (and connections) to get them ahead. It is actually seen as quite shameful to be dating a non-Muslim European woman, and men like that are looked down upon - you rarely see interreligious couples there, unless it's a fling, because they are treated with covert disrespect by people that work in hotels and such. Most women will not notice this if they don't understand the language or culture. I stress that most of the men scamming women are from a very low class, unable to find or afford a "quality" Moroccan wife, and too lazy to find a job, so they take the easy way out. Tthere is a booming tourist industry, with Moroccan designers, businessmen and entrepreneurs living and working overseas. Shadier sources of income consist of drugs and prostitution, that may or may not involve scams. The system is very corrupt there Well this goes without saying, it is very corrupt even if they have a higher education it is extremely hard to progress in life. This is also not true. Moroccans that come from good families, stay focussed in school, do work experience (stage) and are relatively well-connected, are capable of doing very well. But you're right, for the rest it is very difficult. Either that or some are just greedy and want Western luxuries rather than a comfortable existence. Throw greedy, materialistic wives into the mix and you've got Moroccan men on their hands and knees wondering how they're going to pay for her next Gucci handbag. Boys cannot legitimately date, of course boys do have girlfriends but mostly in secret and often they cannot marry these girls. This is also not true. Plenty of boys date and hook up with Moroccan girls, and in ways that are not too dissimilar to Westerners', but without the feminism and Political Correctness. How many British guys do you know that would consider marrying the village bike? Even FWB type setups exist over there, the only difference with Moroccan dating is that the boy's mother will usually have the last word on who he marries. In the end they do usually marry a Moroccan girl, mostly because it is the safer and easier option, and they recognise the identity issues their future children might face etc etc. There are also men that don't care about culture or their own women. Their culture and ways are actually quite shocking, and I mean shocking to us. Yes, the culture is "different" to put it mildly, but Morocco is one of the most modern countries in the region and is becoming increasingly Westernized. There's a lot of stereotypes and misinformation, eg. that all Moroccan men are scammers and neanderthals and the women are pure virgins, when this is far from the truth. As for shocking, while I disagree with some of the rampant misogny over there I don't think there's anything wrong with traditional values, something that's truly lacking in the West - and I think this is one of the things that attracts women to the men.
