Broader implications

Reader comment on item: Israel Shuns Victory

Dr Pipes,

If there is one individual who I truly despise in the western world it is Alan Dershowitz - the law Professor who routinely writes books illustrating how clever he has been in getting one famous or rich person out of murder charges that seemed prima facie rock solid. In his book "Why Terrorism works" however I am forced to agree with many of his conclusions. He states that whilst we condemn terrorism it is historically demonstrable that the phenomena is largely one of our own creation. Not through secret CIA training camps or anything else that is the largely the product of a fevered left wing imagination but our history of appeasement - aye even encouragement through diplomatic and military gestures.

Some of the more horrible atrocities perpetrated by the PLO were closely linked in time with Papal and UN recognition. America fled Lebanon after the loss of a small number of its troops. Western patterns of appeasement, retreat and surrender have continued for much longer than our new found resolution to oppose terrorism and Islamism. Small wonder the Islamists are willing to call our bluff. They're just waiting for us to reach the next trough in our lifestyle centered society's will, the next cycle of retreat and surrender so they can pick up all the ground we yeild.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the philosophy of the west's present cadre of enemies is the patience with which they execute their plans. Their approach is long term. They hold as allies liberal multiculturalists, left wing self haters and all the post 1960s flotsam and jetsam whose candles in the west illuminate nothing and who transmit only their ignorance. It is the purest expression of Georg Lukacs thesis that freedom might be used to destroy itself. Most of the propaganda work that should be done by our enemies is being done by our own media with its dirth of analytical ability and propensity for treason. Islamists ability to retain their political acumen despite the thought disordered logic that underpins their philosophical substrata is indeed extremely impressive.

I hold few illusions about the situation in Israel and am far less certain of eventual victory than Dr Pipes. Palestinean determination will hold sway despite the superior technology and military position of their Israeli opponents. It will unless there is a push to build up the will of the people of Israel to resist the unjust aggression that they themselves are so often accused of unleashing upon the most violent and radicalised population in the world.

Cordially,
Reuben Horne.
