Peace cannot be attained by cajoling the side that wants peace

Reader comment on item: Israel Shuns Victory

The Israelis have to decide for themselves how best to defend themselves in light of the core Palestinian aim of wiping them out. Cajoling them and advising them with words will never have as much effect as the perpetually continued attacks in helping them to come to their decisions.

The question of peace, as always, rests with the side of the confrontation that is on the offensive. When the Palestinians want peace they will have it.

The evidence of the past 50 years is unfortunately not encouraging on that point. Even more discouraging is the fact that one can pick up Josephus' 2000 year old book The Jewish War and easily find many passages about Jewish politics that could be transcribed whole into a current news report without arousing comment or surprise.
