The US vs the "Terrorists" not unlike Israel vs the Palestinians.

Reader comment on item: Israel Shuns Victory

Daniel Pipes:

Israel is fighting a defensive war and such a war cannot be won. The US is doing precisely the same thing with the "Terrorists" in Iraq, although Bush cannot seem to appreciate the fact. We cannot win our war any more than we won in Viet Nam [by restricting ourselves to a limited (defensive) war], or in our earlier war in Korea.

Bush seems to be incapable of recognizing that our real Enemy is Islam, and the ideology preached by the Imam's daily throughout the world, exactly as laid out by Muhammad (in 600 AD?). "Kill the Infidel!"

"In War, there is no substitute for victory", per Douglas MacArthur, but first you must know who it is that you are fighting. And that Enemy must be made to surrender, unconditionally!

I believe that Israel does know who their Enemy is, and that the Palestinians Terrorists are simply counter-parts of the Iraqi Terrorists, with the real Enemy being Islam, just as with the US.

The real question becomes: "How do you win a war with an Islamic nation of 1 billion peole?", all of whom have been conditioned since infancy to unquestionably obey the commands of their leaders. (This conditioning explains why your friendly neighbor suddenly became violent.) The tactics would require massive and prompt retaliation to every terrorist attack, so massive that the leadership would, if not surrender, at least look for less painful methods of achieving their goal of world domination. (That he doesn't have the least interest in Bush's "Democracy" is another fact that Bush cannot even imagine.}

Unfortunately, the World would frown on the tactics required to win, but I suggest that they would have frowned on Truman's use of the atomic bombs on Japan had they known in advance of the horrors of such bombs. Never mind that the bombs saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of my buddies in the Pacific, had we been required to invade Japan, and probably as many or more lives of the Japanese fighting to repel our invasion.

The arithmetic is the same today. If we don't compel surrender of our Enemy, we (who are their enemy) will lose massively in the years to come, and tragically in that such losses could have been avoided.
