Intractable Enemy

Reader comment on item: Israel Shuns Victory
in response to reader comment: How to win?

Submitted by Paul M. Neville (United States), Mar 28, 2006 at 22:14

Israel has always fought defensive wars either because of international pressure or because of the realism that it is impossible, short of nuclear weapons, to bring lasting defeat on the vast Arab populations that surround it. Arabs, moreover, are an intractable enemy that would only recognize oblitheration as a defeat. The Arabs, because of religious dictates, can never accept any form of peace that allows Israel to survive. Given this situation the path chosen by Sharon was the only rational solution-isolate and control the enemy. Box them in and let them stew in their own jucies. They will ultimately deginirate into warring clans fighting for the scraps their fellow Arabs (or Iranians) throw them.
