Dr. Brandstetter,

I'm an American with wholehearted sympathy and admiration for Israel but that doesn't mean I think that the US is somehow responsible for the detailed day to day defense of Israel. Your notion that the US gains some sort of benefit from the perpetual strife between the surrounding Muslims and Israel makes as little sense as the preposterous fantasies of the Muslims. To the contrary, our sympathy with Israel as a fellow democracy greatly complicates our position in the middle east because it ensures that our relations with the Muslims can never be better than semi-hostile as long as they maintain their aim of eliminating Israel which they will probably do for our lifetimes.

Going further I can easily see the US being drawn into a very bloody war in the event of a nuclear exchange between one of the surrounding states and Israel because the American people (me included) will never allow a sympathetic little guy to be smashed without responding forcefully.
