Achieving Victory

Reader comment on item: Israel Shuns Victory

Submitted by Gil Bindelglas (United States), Mar 28, 2006 at 15:29

Dr. Pipes,

Your article does a good job of identifying the deficiencies in the various Israeli approaches to dealing with the Palestinian conflict.

However, where you propose an alternative approach (i.e., achieving victory over the Palestinians) and articulate nicely the value of such an approach, you fail to describe for the reader how Israel should acheive victory? What will victory over the Palestinians (and other Arab/Muslim countries) look like? How does Israel get these nations to dismiss their struggle? What is the cost in time and resources (human and financial) to achieve such a a victory?

Is it possible that until there are more representative governments in the Muslim Middle East, these nations will always need to manufacture an external threat (e.g., Israel, the U.S.) to deflect scrutiny into their corrupt and otherwise unpopular governance?

Yours,

Gil Bindelglas
