Response to Roger re Gaza Strip

Reader comment on item: Bush Declares War on Radical Islam
in response to reader comment: Unimpressed by Bush

I can't remember seeing a single speech in which President Bush demanded that Israel evacuate the Gaza Strip, and I certainly don't remember seeing any threats of force to evict Israel from Gaza, so Roger's assertion doesn't make a lot of sense.

It seems to me that the Israeli government made the decision to evacuate Gaza on a fairly straightforward cost/benefit basis. Maintaining a costly occupation of an area that size to protect a relatively small Jewish population didn't make sense. The evacuation was no doubt hard on those who were thus displaced, but sometimes governments are forced by simple necessity to actions that are hard to swallow.

It's been becoming more and more clear that Israel cannot live at peace with the Palestinians in the age of terrorism, so separation appears to be the only option, and that means Israel must establish short and clearly defined defensible borders.
