Henri Lammens had no like for Islam. However, his work on Islam and the Sira and the historical Muhammad has never been refuted.

He was able to prove that al-Sira al-Nabawiyya, al-Ahadith and al-Tarikh are really no more than other forms of Tafsir. al-Mufasereen were trying to find ways to explain what this opaque revelation is saying. al-Tabari repeats this sentence in many verses: واختلف اهل التاءويل or: and the people of the tafsir (the word ta'well also means tafsir) disagreed. This sentence means that no one had no clue what the verse is saying which the reader will find very often in his tafsir

Check Lammens' best work: "Fatima and the Daughters of Muhammad." Great work. You will find it translated to English in one of Ibn Warraq's books. Just google it
