The Meccan pagans were not impressed with the Qur'an and they told Muhammad that his "stories" in the Qur'an are no more than "Asateer al-Awaleen" or the "Fables on the Ancients." And they, Meccan pagans, were familiar with these stories from far better sources. They make fun of his versions ( preserved in the Qur'an in the story of Ahl al-Kahf and plagiarized from the Syriac story of "The Seven Sleepers of Ephesus" which was written by a Syriac priest).

More? The smart Jews and Meccan pagans refuted his so called "Tawheed" or the unity of his God and it is preserved in Tafsir al-Tabari of Q112:1. And here is the question that was posed by the Jews and the Meccan pagans: If Allah created this creation, then who created Allah? If you are interested to know more then let me know

Muhammad did not understand why would the Jews reject him and why would even his own people, the Meccan pagans did not believe him and wanted to enjoy life, drink wine, trade and make money and enjoy the company of beautiful women. This could very well be why he and his God told his followers to invade the lands of other nations and loot and looting they did.

As for modern Arabs, if you check YouTube for ex-Muslims from the Arab world, you will discover that the message is loud and clear and it is as follows: Studying the Quran would lead either to apostacy or becoming a jihadist. There seems to be no happy medium.
