How many people have read Quran seriously

Reader comment on item: Uncovering Early Islam
in response to reader comment: The Quran was revealed to Muhammad

Submitted by Prashant (United States), Oct 14, 2014 at 01:41

Dear Dr Pipes,

not many people have read their religious scriptures sincerely but, luckily, not many people claim that their scriptures are the final words of God. Lot of Muslims, however, make huge claims about Quran.

I am wondering if there are any statistics on what percent of Muslims have read the Quran in a language that they fully understand. Reciting without understanding does not count.
