Michael, row the boat ashore

in response to reader comment: Faith vs Religion

Submitted by David (United States), Jul 13, 2006 at 19:00

I have never participated in a discussion site like this before, but am moved to do so by Michael's distinction between faith and religion. In a few very well-chosen words, he has summed up the difference eloquently.

As a historian, I see Michael's comments as a sort of narration on what people have been struggling with, at least since the Renaissance. The Church, the mosques and so on have become the institutions of religion, and have interceded themselves between people and faith. I'm certain that if Christ knows about the Vatican, he is appalled. To this day, religious authorities continue to make out that people of faith are heretics, and to self-righteously kill them in too many cases.

A vast proportion of the world's problems are due to religion and its superstitious followers. As Michael says, religion divides us, faith is unifying. So how do we change this?
