Reader comment on item: Amazon.com's Koran Desecration Problem

Submitted by Arun Gupta (United States), May 21, 2005 at 13:24

Some people here have tried to infuse backbone into amazon.com by threatening to take their business elsewhere. In my opinion, that is playing the game by the Islamists' rules. The only reason to boycott amazon.com, by the rules of free speech and trade would be if their services were not competitive, and not because they did something that is ideologically offensive to us.

I think it is more fruitful to remind them that the company was born and grew up in a particular culture, and not another, and to betray
some of the values of that culture is not right; that we stand with them against any attempt to hold them accountable for anything but
their common sense responsibilities - to provide replacement goods or money back to a dissatisfied customer. The only case in which amazon.com has additional responsibility is if an employee is suspected of damaging the goods.
