meaning of jihadReader comment on item: What is Jihad? Submitted by Swamy S (United States), Jan 15, 2003 at 09:13 I applaud Daniel Pipes' boldness in expressing the meaning of the term Jihad and it's significance in the way in which most Muslims seem to look upon the rest of the non-muslim world. It is also very interesting to see the attempts at soft-pedalling the definition by "moderate" muslim scholars and others. I have yet to find a muslim spiritual leader of repute give this word a benign meaning. These are the people who wield great influence in directing the thoughts and actions of a great number of people. I suppose they remain silent because they see Jihad as a holy war and/or they are afraid of a Fatwa on their head if they say something moderate.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
