Jihad means "struggle" not "holy war"Reader comment on item: What is Jihad? Submitted by muslim american (United States), Oct 28, 2008 at 04:41 Pipes derives the definition of the word Jihad from hand picked sources of terrorism, not its true arabic meaning.... interpretation is highly misleading to anyone that reads this article. He starts by asking what the word Jihad means, then diverts to dictators and terrorists that mention the word. What happened to the actual meaning of the word... ? ...The word translates to STRUGGLE. This applies to struggling with anything, be it learning something, fixing a car, struggling at work, and so on. It also has a psychological element of mental struggle, for example in daily life. Pipes... defines the word then uses it to describe terrorist acts by arabs. That is a twisted use of an arabic word intended to batter the arab image and liken it to terrorism.... I make Jihad every day and have never spilled another man's blood because of religion, nor do I plan on doing so.
