I think that the civilized world will come out ahead in the end. But it is a question of cost.

I fear that the West will not be moved to decisive action until after the next outrage -- and that the next outrage will outdo 9/11 by an order of magnitude. And the response will be kind to the innocents only insofar as such kindness does not interfere with the elimination of the problem once and for all.
