Muslims learn violence from the US? Pull the other one, it's got bells on!

George P Roy thinks that Muslims learned their violence from the US - how ridiculous.

Try reading the Qu'ran and see how Muslims under the direct 'leadership' of Muhammed were committing Allah-sanctioned betrayal, murder, rape, torture (see Kinana), extortion, slavery and violence 1000 years before America declared its independence from England. Violence is not a new thing for Islam. The Qu'ran is steeped in bloodshed and exhortations to kill those who are not Muslim. And those attitudes and commands are still indoctrinated at Friday prayers in many, many mosques across the world.

I know that you can cherry-pick from almost any religion and make it say what you want. For example the Bible says both 'an eye for an eye' and 'turn the other cheek'. What surprised me was the sheer number of instances where death and violence were commanded for unbelievers or transgressors of Islam. That and the unshakeable belief that Islam is not only the only 'true' religion (they all say that don't they?) but that all Muslims are better than any unbeliever - no matter who they are or how they live their lives. This is a very dangerous set of beliefs furthered by instruction not to make friends of non-Muslims unless you think you may be able to convert them to Islam. This particular command cleverly keeps Muslims from 'outsiders' and their different beliefs. It is easier to see outsiders as less human, less worthy of care, less of a loss to the world if they die.

I know there are moderate Muslims, I'm sure many believe that Islam is a religon of peace - but there are an awful lot who believe that human sacrifice - both of themselves and others - is what their God wants. For those who want to kill in Allah's name (whether it be cartoonists or children who happen to be in the path of a carbomb) they should do it honestly and take their victims along to Friday prayers and spill their lives over the carpets they pray on. I always thought that 'civilised' people of any faith thought human sacrifice the worst kind of sin imaginable. Why have these particular adherents of Islam been taught otherwise?
