Reader comment on item: What Do Terrorists Want? [A Caliphate and Shari'a]

Submitted by Pansy (United States), Jul 28, 2005 at 18:10

Since 9/11 I've been reading all I can about Islam. I had some knowledge about it before, but recent reading, especially of things said/written by people like Mohammed, has all made me realize one thing (Tim Williams is right): There's no reasoning with these people. It's as if we inhabited completely different worlds, theirs one where the rules of (Aristotelian) logic don't apply. Somebody was saying that these people are "sugarcoating" everything. What they are doing is pure sofistry, cunning ways of denying the obvious or going around it or clouding reality with veils of smoke, perfected by their religious scholars and "lawyers." Their language is both bellicose and evasive, as if meant to drive you nuts. Words don't mean what the've always meant to you. There's a cold "rationality" to this kind of thinking. Whatever evils piled on the Western man by the left (lack of respect for nature, racism, ethnocentricity, colonialism, you name it), they seem to be little games played in the sandpit compared to what these guys are up to.
For an incisive look--and a good laugh--read the pages about Mohammed in H.G. Welles' History of the World. This is what these guys want to destroy, the spirit animating these pages, the humor, the irony, the detached and urbane reasoning.... And they will, if we let them.
